Opinion: Distance makes the heart grow fonder

Heidi Beedle, Staff Reporter  In my youth, I travelled quite a bit. I grew up in rural Virginia, and then joined the Army. Uncle Sam gave me the opportunity to visit South Korea, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Germany and at least half a dozen states. I settled in Colorado Springs and put down roots. I’ve been here since 2005, and I have lived here longer than I have anywhere else. It is, definitively, home. Last week I spent three days in Boston for the Association of Alternative Newspapers with a handful of other  Indy folks. The last time I was there, briefly, was probably 2004, when I visited a high school friend who lived there during leave from Iraq. It was wonderful to be back on the East Coast, the see the Atlantic Ocean and eat fresh seafood — oh my God, the seafood! — but I was strangely homesick the whole time.

Now playing: a return to the movies

July came around, the pandemic was very much not over, and the response to Tenet, which Warner Brothers released to theaters despite hesitancy among exhibitors and audiences alike, was lukewarm in all respects. Moviegoers were wary about the prospect, and, if they did journey out to see it, were largely disappointed by what they found: a film that was too loud, too confusing, and, perhaps most frustratingly, was being viewed in a

The promise of health care for queer folks in Chicago

The social inequality and stigma afflicting the LGBTQ+ and TGNC (transgender and gender non-conforming) populations in Chicago creates a health-care quandary; they’re more susceptible to issues such as HIV, cancer, and suicide, yet less likely to receive care.  Nationally, LGBT youth are two to three times more likely to attempt suicide, gay men are at higher risk for HIV and other STDs, and transgender individuals have a higher prevalence of mental health issues, HIV/STDs, suicide, and less access to health insurance, according to the CDC.

Documenting the front lines of social change

Holcombe When the Black Lives Matter and other social justice uprisings hit Chicago last year, the creators at Soft Cage Films were ready. The nonprofit film production company has been documenting social change, combating oppressive systems, and amplifying underrepresented voices of color in film through experimental techniques, artistic collaboration, and engaging storylines since its founding in 2012. Before 2020, the team worked in person all over the city and produced a wide array of films including a musical inspired by real events of police torture at Homan Square and the community work to stop it, a drama about a revolutionary street artist s fight against capitalism, and a supernatural horror film that was the group s first feature

A day in the life of Chicago s Canada Geese | Feature

The birds are flocking to the city for survival. Scientists think that geese sleep on the water to evade land predators, though that isn’t necessary in the city. Caroline Catherman Chicago has become a better home for Canada Geese than their natural habitat ever was. The world’s largest goose is twice as likely to survive in the city compared to the wild, according to a 2017 study. This is especially true during winter, hunting season in Illinois. As urban areas expand, animals such as Chicago’s tens of thousands of Canada Geese will continue to move to cities or die trying.   v
