Alia Atkinson is mulling retirement at the end of the year.
Atkinson competed in her fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo, swimming in prelims of the 100 breaststroke on Sunday night. She finished third in her heat and did not qualify for the semifinals. Atkinson made the final in this event in each of the last two Olympics: she placed 4th in London in 2012 and 8th in Rio in 2016.
She told the Jamaica Observer, “If you see me next year, then ask me what happened because that’s not the plan right now. I’m going to finish off the rest of the year as I have World Cups and ISL [International Swimming League] coming up, so we’ll see there, and then December we probably look at where I am in life.”
King, 24, an Indiana University graduate from Evansville, was pushed to the bronze medal in 1:05.54. She was trying to become the first woman to win successive golds in the 100 breaststroke.
“I was definitely racing for a medal, Jacoby said. I wasn’t really expecting a gold medal, so when I looked up at the scoreboard it was insane.”
The only younger U.S. swimmers to win gold in the past 21 years were Katie Ledecky, 15, and Missy Franklin, 17, both in 2012, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Jacoby is one of 11 teenagers, 10 of them women, on the U.S. swim team. The other is Carmel’s Jake Mitchell, 19.
