Attorneys argued over the evidence with Steingold emphasizing the several details that he considers questionable: Claims by Farmington Hills Police Sgt. Richard Wehby, now a lieutenant, that he could tell from security camera footage of shadows cast on an outdoors berm that the person who tossed Huranieh, 35, out an upper-story window was a male.
“I don’t think that’s science at all,” Steingold said. “There’s no way anyone can determine looking at this shadow whether it was a male or female.” Autopsy implications that Huranieh died from asphyxia and smothering.
“How was she smothered?” Steingold asked. “Where was she smothered? Where’s the evidence? If she was smothered, then she was overpowered.
Appellate attorney Carole Stanyar spoke after the Michigan Supreme Court declared Altantawi’s statements to police inadmissible. Prosecutors had conceded the teen endured a “custodial interrogation” at his home without being advised of his Miranda rights to an attorney and to remain silent when questioned.
“He’s a juvenile. He’s surrounded by detectives who have basically taken over his home. He’s isolated from family (with) no Miranda warnings.
“The detectives feed him facts, saying that they know this and they know that already. The detectives repeatedly suggest to Muhammad how it happened. He repeatedly says, ‘But I don’t know what happened.’ He finally breaks down crying and says ‘Tell me what you want me to say and I’ll say it.’ That interrogation explains the decisions in this case.”

BERKLEY/ROYAL OAK Advocates are working to ensure domestic violence victims have more help and protection as the frequency and lethality of domestic abuse increases amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
A group of more than two dozen people from agencies across Berkley, Royal Oak and Oakland County have partnered together to create a High Risk Response Team within the local court system.
A High Risk Response Team, as defined by Lindsay Garascia, the co-chair for Berkley and Royal Oak’s HRRT, is a “multidisciplinary approach to enhance victim safety and offender accountability, and to spread education and awareness about domestic violence.”
Suspected accomplice arrested after Farmington Hills home invasion

FARMINGTON HILLS Farmington Hills police announced the arrest of a 26-year-old woman from Detroit who is a suspected accomplice in a late-night home invasion Dec. 7 at the Diamond Forest Apartment complex, on Halsted Road, between Nine Mile Road and Grand River Avenue, where multiple gunshots were reported.
According to a press release, several 911 calls reporting gunfire came in around 11:30 p.m.
As police began to investigate, preliminary information indicated that three male suspects had broken into an apartment and stolen several firearms before being confronted by the residents, who then fired several gunshots at the suspects as they immediately fled the apartment.
