The Martha s Vineyard Times To the Editor: We must applaud the Martha’s Vineyard Chiefs of Police Association for its vision and proactive coordination in establishing a need for implicit bias training and seeking a pre-eminently qualified and experienced training team from Hilliard Heintze to facilitate sessions on-Island May 4-6.  We wish to thank the Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation (also known as the Permanent Endowment) and the Martha’s Vineyard Diversity Coalition for joining our group, the Martha’s Vineyard Social Justice Leadership Foundation, in providing financial support for this training endeavor.  We also commend their sincere invitation of including a community segment in the Leadership Course to share the curricula framework presented to all police personnel this week, and listen to its feedback about racially just policing and recommendations for advancing a progressive agenda for action.

Island police completed a three-day training session on implicit and unconscious bias last week. The training was conducted at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School by Hillard Heintze, a security risk-management firm based in Chicago. The Martha’s Vineyard Diversity Coalition received a $25,000 grant to fully fund the training sessions, which were prompted by the recent spate of tragic African American killings during police procedures across the country. The grant comprised $17,000 from the Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation, $7,000 from the Martha’s Vineyard Social Justice Leadership Foundation, and $1,000 from the Social Action Committee of the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center. Members of the Island’s six police departments will engage in an implicit and unconscious bias training May 4, 5, and 6. The training will be conducted on-Island by Hillard Heintze, a security risk management team based in Chicago. Originally scheduled for November, Island police chiefs moved the training to the spring amid COVID-19 concerns. Vera Shorter was a pillar for social activism on Martha’s Vineyard and beyond. Gabrielle Mannino The Island lost two of its leading and longtime civil rights advocates Saturday, Vera Shorter and Herb Foster. Shorter was born in 1923 in Huntington, Long Island. Shorter’s life was devoted to family, career, and civil rights advocacy in New York. She attended business school, and became the first African American equal opportunity officer in the New York district of the IRS. Her activism led her to the Brooklyn chapter of the NAACP.
