Dr. Cornel West Leaves Harvard University Over Tenure Spat

Dr. Cornel West has left Harvard University after it balked at a recommendation that his untenured position become a tenured one.
West, a popular and well-known African American Studies professor, progressive activist, and political correspondent, will return to the Union Theological Seminary where he has taught on multiple occasions. West has also taught classes at Yale and Princeton over the course of his career.
West recently told
The Boycott Times he grew tired of the hypocrisy and politics he experienced at the Ivy League school saying, “I can only take so much pettiness in terms of ways in which I thought I was disrespected and devalued.”

West previously said he’d leave Harvard if it continued to deny him tenure. Harvard responded that tenure was beyond the scope of his recent performance review. This will be the second time West leaves Harvard; he left for Princeton University in 2002 following a dispute with Harvard’s then-president Lawrence Summers.

Dr. Cornel West, 67, has followed through on his threat to leave Harvard University after the school failed to consider him for tenure. The renowned scholar and activist will return to Union Theological Seminary, where he was first hired at age 23, and has taught at various times over the years.
“I’ve got to make my move to the great Union Theological Seminary. My perennial home,” West said. “I’m making the move back to New York, and it’s not a move out of default. Not at all. I’m going with a smile. I’m going fired up.” He added on Twitter, “Our struggle for truth & justice continues with style & smiles!“
Philosopher and activist Cornel West announced on Monday that he is leaving Harvard University’s Divinity School.
West announced on Twitter that he will be moving to Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
