LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 1, 2021) The University of Kentucky’s Martin Luther King Center, in collaboration with units across campus, will host a variety of events and programming, most of which will be virtual, to celebrate Black History Month this February.
While this year’s observance looks different than past year’s due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the observation of Black History Month will, nonetheless, allow the history and culture of Black Americans to be centered in recognition of past and present challenges, struggles and achievements.
“Since the late 60s and officially in 1976, Black History Month has been a long-awaited time for the corporate celebration of Black culture, Black stories and Black people,” said Chandler Frierson, UK senior and programming intern at the MLK Center. “With that narrative, this year’s Black History Month is a special month. SOUTH BEND â Adults plan plenty of events with the intent of giving children something positive to do on Friday nights.
The problem is that those sporting events or community and church functions end around 9 or 10 p.m., leaving teenagers with a lot of unspent energy and a lot of time on their hands.
âA lot of times people get caught up in the late night hours, and a lot of times our events take place in earlier time because we (schedule) our events when comfortable for us and not necessarily for our teens,â said Kintae Lark, who is the youth employment manager for the city of South Bend.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - As Vice President Kamala Harris was sworn into office today, girls across the nation watched in awe, knowing that nothing is out of reach.
âItâs exciting because sheâs the first African American woman to be the Vice President,â said Imoni and Saniyah James, sisters ages eight and nine.
Before Election Day, it seemed impossible to the girls. Even until today, these girls thought they might never see a female vice president , let alone a woman who looks like them.
