A long-time member of the Billings Fire Department on Manitoulin Island will head up the department.
Martin Connell, who is a 17-year veteran of the service and has held the position of deputy chief was unanimously appointed by Billings township council.
The position was advertised internally following the resignation of former fire chief Merv Gilchrist in December who resigned for health reasons.
Connell will assume the new position immediately.
The money was raised through the Respect Project’s ‘Kick Start Your Health’ programme made up of over 25 men over the age of 40.
The men took part in a sponsored mountain climb of the Mournes on Sunday 11 October.
Speaking at the cheque presentation, Martin said when the programme developed, the group wanted to undertake a fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for PIPS Hope and Support.
“When the Kick Start Your Health programme began, we asked the group to undertake a fundraising event and with the programme having a heavy emphasis on mental health, we selected PIPS Hope and Support because they have been providing invaluable support to our community from 2003, helping so many with issues affecting their quality of life and we knew this money would do just that.
