It s Exciting! : New Yorkers Cast Ballots With Hopes of a New City for All

‘It’s Exciting!’: New Yorkers Cast Ballots With Hopes of a New City for All Share this story Hiram Alejandro Durán/THE CITY As New Yorkers voted on Primary Day, many said they were struggling to adjust to a lot of things. While more than 190,000 New Yorkers cast ballots during the early-voting period that began June 12, the unusual timing of the election in June, rather than the traditional September paired with the debut of ranked choice voting introduced some new wrinkles. So did an unusually crowded field of candidates seeking seats from City Hall to City Council. THE CITY fanned out across the five boroughs on a rainy Tuesday to talk to New Yorkers weary after an intense and confusing campaign season conducted in the middle of a pandemic. Marti Allen-Cummings Interview About New York City Council Candidacy

Marti Allen-Cummings In its truest form, drag is a protest. The protests of trans women, non-binary people, and drag artists were the impetus of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, one of the most sweeping political revolutions in modern history. That’s where Marti Allen-Cummings, candidate for New York City Council in 2021, comes in. If elected, they will make history as the first non-binary person and first drag artist to hold public office in New York City (and the state). Allen-Cummings is running for city council in New York City’s 7th District, which includes the neighborhoods of Manhattan Valley, Morningside Heights, Wast Harlem, Hamilton Heights, and parts of Washington Heights. They currently sit on NYC Community Board Nine and as an adviser on the mayor’s Nightlife Advisory Board. Cummi

New York City Council Member Mark Levine, who represents District 7, was made for the coronavirus moment. Dubbed “the Anthony Fauci of the New York City Council” by then-Council Member Ritchie Torres, Levine became an unlikely high-profile pandemic leader, advocating for policies like the closing of restaurants and bars, and the release of racial disparity data on the impact of the pandemic. He recovered from COVID-19, clashed publicly with the mayor on coronavirus policies and is now spreading awareness of vaccine appointment availability on Twitter, recently endorsing the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
