White and Latino Plaintiffs Stall Oregon COVID Relief Fund Specifically Addressing Needs of Black Families and Businesses, Calling It Discriminatory
Citing a number of historical disparities that have decimated the Black community for centuries, Oregon lawmakers last year took steps in trying to ease the burden on African-Americans impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Legislators carved out $62 million in aid for Black families and business owners from the state’s $1.6 billion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act package.
But a pair of federal lawsuits filed last year in the U.S. District Court of Oregon successfully sought injunctions to stop those grant dollars from reaching their intended targets, calling the relief fund unconstitutional and biased.

Resident Artist Series – Portland Opera
It is always fun to hear some of the best up-and-coming singers before they are discovered by everyone else. Portland Opera’s Resident Artist Program has an excellent record of finding such talent. This year’s crop will be beamed live from the Hampton Opera Center in three programs of solos, duets, and ensemble numbers accompanied by coach and pianist Joseph Williams. The first program

The Jessel Gallery will host a Holiday Celebration Weekend on Saturday, Dec. 19 and Sunday, Dec. 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Masks are required and social distancing will be in place to allow visitors to browse through the works of local artists and craftspeople in the spacious, multi-room gallery.
Individually wrapped treats will be offered, along with free gift wrapping.
Among the artists represented in the annual homemade treasures show and sale are Diane Pope (assorted gifts with her watercolor images), Marcia Garcia (hand-made baskets), Kate Canon (fused glass fish spoon rests), Joy West (ice dyed scarves), Joan Tsudama (hand-made crafts), Patti Wessman (glass), along with a glittering assortment of holiday ornaments and treasures, a jewelry gallery and landscape paintings.
