Lyft driver speaks after being shot, paralyzed on West Side
CHICAGO (WBBM) A rideshare driver just doing his job was shot when he was sent to pick up a fare.
He is now confined to a wheelchair, and he is trying to pick up the pieces of his life and move forward.
As CBS 2’s Suzanne Le Mignot reported Tuesday, Marcus Kelley says he was sad for the first week after a bullet claimed his ability to walk. But he said his family and friends are helping him adjust to this new chapter in his life.
It was here on Feb. 27 at the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Springfield Avenue in the West Garfield Park neighborhood that Kelley’s life would change forever.
“I’m glad to be home, especially to my mom and brother,” he said.
Police say that the incident that resulted in Kelley being shot was a carjacking gone wrong. Authorities say Kelley was at the intersection of Jackson and Pulaski in the West Garfield Park neighborhood when he was confronted by a group of teens.
Kelley attempted to flee the scene, but was shot twice. CPD has continued to investigate the shooting, and a 15-year-old boy is now in custody and facing attempted murder charges.
“I cannot imagine a 15-year-old with a gun. Where did he get it from? Why didn’t his parents know he had it?” Esther Kelley, Marcus’ mother, asks.
Brown noted that juvenile offenders faces would be blurred in the photos on the web page.
When reporting a carjacking, CPD reminded residents to use the following characteristics of the offender, if possible: gender, race/ethnicity, age, height, weight, body build, face, hair, complexion, voice, other notable physical characteristics, clothing and the interaction.
Here s what police said to do in order to prevent a carjacking:
Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings
Always lock your car
Always keep track of your keys, never leave them inside the vehicle
Park in a safe spot
Do not leave children unattended inside your vehicle
