Speaking in whens, not ifs, Terry Supahan, Kevin Malone and Jim McQuillen envisioned a Del Norte County with significantly improved high school graduation rates with students moving on to, and staying in, college.
A U.S. Department of Education’s $30 million Promise Neighborhood Grant can support a new career-technical education program in construction, manufacturing and utilities, family resource centers in Smith River and Klamath, and enable Del Norte to grow its own crop of teachers and counselors, Malone said.
U.S. Highway 101 was open to one-lane travel Tuesday night after another week of landslide activity blocked the road at Last Chance Grade.
Crews have been working on the road since last week, when precipitation caused the hillside above the highway to crumble down, blocking both lanes for extended periods of time.
As of Tuesday evening, crews warned motorists of possible 30-minute delays overnight, as well as three-hour delays scheduled between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to allow for removal and prevention work.
âWe will continue constant monitoring of the slide and will provide updates here as we receive them,â Caltrans District 1 officials wrote in Facebook updates Tuesday. âThank you very much to our crews, our slide catchment and those motorists maintaining patience and attentiveness for keeping the slide area safe.â

LONDON - A major British doctors group says the U.K. government should âurgently reviewâ its decision to give people a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine up to 12 weeks after the first, rather than the shorter gap recommended by the manufacturer and the World Health Organization.
The U.K., which has Europeâs deadliest coronavirus outbreak, adopted the policy in order to give as many people as possible a first dose of vaccine quickly. So far almost 5.9 million people in Britain have received a shot of either a vaccine made by U.S. drugmaker Pfizer and Germany s BioNTech or one developed by U.K.-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
