Kaukau 4 Keiki helping Maui families
By Staff | Jul 9, 2021 A recent University of Hawaii study found that nearly half of Hawaii families with children reported struggling to pay for meals as of March 2021, with an estimated 54,700 children facing hunger. According to Feeding America and the Maui Food Bank, one of every five children is food insecure in Maui County. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state Department of Education, Kaukau 4 Keiki was created to address the gap in food access for needy students who are unable to access the DOE’s summer Grab and Go Meals distribution sites due to lack of transportation or family/work schedule.

KAPALUA As a world-class sports event returned to Maui last week with the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions, the Sentry Insurance Foundation announced it donated $250,000 to the Maui Food Bank. The Maui Food Bank is the county’s primary safety net for hunger relief. It’s currently serving 10,000 people each week with emergency food distributions. Since Sentry became title sponsor of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the mutual insurance company spent significant time on the island building relationships with local organizations, talking with local leaders about areas of need and becoming a part of the Maui community.
