Olney Central College’s Information Systems Technology Program recently refurbished and donated 10 computers to the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges’ TRIO Student Support Services Program.
“We are thrilled PJ (Zeilstra) thought of us and our students,” said TRIO SSS Director Wain Davis. “These computers will help students get access to the technology they need to further their education.”
The computers were distributed last month to three students at both OCC and Wabash Valley College. Two students each at Lincoln Trail and Frontier Community colleges also benefitted from the IST students’ efforts.
The computers were used in IECC labs until being replaced with new equipment. IST students added RAM and made other minor updates needed for home use.

Purdue University Fort Wayne for more than a decade has had in place a TRIO Student Support Services Program. In what ways does it help PFW students?
TRIO programs are federal outreach and student service programs designed to help first-generation students prepare and complete college degrees. TRIO programs were authorized in the Higher Education Act of 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson as an initiative in the War on Poverty.
The TRIO name refers to the original set of three programs authorized in the legislation (Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search and Student Support Services); however, today TRIO now includes a total of seven educational-opportunity programs.

Global health leader is SIU Alumni Association’s 2021 Distinguished Alumna
CARBONDALE, Ill. Dr. Senait Fisseha, director of global programs for the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and chief adviser to the director general of the World Health Organization, is the winner of the SIU Alumni Association’s 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor presented to alumni by the organization.
Fisseha will be honored, along with four other alumni of distinction, during an April 24 invitation-only dinner and ceremony at the Banterra Center. Fisseha earned her combined medical and law degrees from SIU in 1999 and is recognized as a global health leader and advocate in women’s reproductive health and rights.
