NATICK Sue Ianni, the Natick Town Meeting member charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot at the US Capitol, would be removed from that post if she were convicted of a felony and sentenced to jail, a Boston defense attorney says.
Peter Elikann, former chairman of the Massachusetts Bar Association Criminal Justice Section Council, told the Daily News that Natick’s Town Charter and Town Meeting Member Handbook “clearly state” that Natick Town Meeting is governed by Massachusetts General Laws, and must comply with those laws.
Chapter 279, Section 30 essentially states that if a state or federal court hands down a felony conviction that results in prison time while the convicted person holds an office governed by the U.S. Constitution or laws of Massachusetts at the time of sentencing, the office holder is removed from office.
