Roman Requeña
As the weekend was about to break on Friday, April 16, there was a late afternoon shooting in Belize City. It took place on Magazine Road when Roman Requeña, 39, was shot and killed. The Mahogany Heights resident was inside a yard located at the corner of Magazine Road and Logwood Street at around 3:30 p.m. when he was approached by an unknown gunman. That person immediately opened fire and Requeña sustained multiple injuries to his body. Investigators arrived on scene and his body was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but pronounced dead.
Police are working to determine what exactly transpired and who would want Requeña dead, but have no clue into this investigation. According to his mother, Requeña was a laborer and the home where he was murdered was somewhere they all lived as a family. The police believe that he was in fact the intended target in this murder but have no suspects.
The PUP administration presented its budget for the financial year 2021-2022 during a House Meeting on Friday April 9th. The budget presentation was largely unimpressive with observers stating that it was the most boring presentations ever. And while the reader, Prime Minister Johnny Briceno, could not inspire anyone by his monotonous reading, a portion of the reading did catch our attention. In his presentation he cited that 40% of Government’s indebtedness is as a result of the Superbond.
He broke down the numbers as follows:
“$872 million is owed to our bilateral lenders, 55 percent of which was borrowed under the Petro Caribe Program with Venezuela; while 34 percent of this amount is owed to the Republic of China on Taiwan and the small remainder to other friendly countries.

Michael Escalante
Last week, we reported on the murder of Orange Walk resident Michael Escalante. Escalante’s body was discovered in the grass on the side of the road around mile thirty-three on the George Price Highway; his 2017 Wingle pickup was missing. But as we found out from ACP Joseph Myvett today, investigators do not believe that robbery was the motive behind the crime. Escalante was shot once to the head and his body discarded on the roadside. Then his killer or killers took off with his vehicle, Escalante was not robbed of his money. Two days after his murder and with assistance from air surveillance, police discovered the wingle on Friday morning in a wooded area of the Mahogany Heights community. ACP Myvett says that they are looking for four persons.
Micah Baltazar
Was 19-year-old Micah Baltazar lured to his death on Neal’s Pen Road on the night of Monday, December 14? That, among other questions, are what police are attempting to find answers to as they investigate this shooting murder. For now, the police are saying that this incident is gang-related and that he was in the wrong neighborhood but Baltazar’s mother, who has conceded that her son is no saint, says that her child was misunderstood. What is certain, however, is that Baltazar had just left his cousin’s house located on Rivero Street when someone told him that a girl was looking for him. As such, he headed onto Neal’s Pen Road and it was at around 7:30 p.m. when he was ambushed. A lone gunman fired several shots in his direction and he was left to bleed out on the sidewalk.
