Hawaii declares state of emergency after heavy floods overwhelm roads and bridges
The Governor of Hawaii, David Ige, declared a state of emergency Tuesday after torrential rains prompted evacuations, damaged homes, and almost caused a dam failure. The severe weather is expected to continue until Friday, when the state will release general funds to help those affected by the storms. The order covers Hawaii, Maui, Kalawao and Kauai counties, as well as the city and county of Honolulu.
The town of Haleiwa on the island of Oahu’s North Shore was evacuated due to “catastrophic flooding,” however, this order was rescinded seven hours later while road closures were kept in place.

The governor of Hawaii declared a state of emergency after severe flooding across the state s islands prompted evacuations, damaged homes and raised alarm over a possible dam failure.
Gov. David Ige signed the proclamation on Tuesday to release state general funds to help those impacted by the extreme weather, which he said is expected to continue until Friday. The order covers the counties of Hawaii, Maui, Kalawao and Kauai, as well as the city and county of Honolulu.
Residents of the town of Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu were ordered on Tuesday afternoon to evacuate because of catastrophic flooding. Officials lifted the evacuation order some seven hours later but said road closures remained in place.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state says a century-old earthen dam on Maui that overflowed Monday and triggered evacuations is slated for removal this summer.
Authorities worried that the Kaupakalua Dam would fail Monday amid torrential rains. It didn’t, but the dam did overflow and officials said water levels remain high.
In a news release Tuesday, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said the dam ― which is 138 years old ― has been the subject of growing concern over the last year.
