Kayakers Found Safe First responders searched the Des Moines River Sunday night for a pair of missing kayakers. The two individuals were found safe. Eddyville, Iowa – A pair of kayakers were found safe after being reported being late to their destination. Mahaska County Sheriff Russ VanRenterghem said a group of three had departed Eveland Access along the Des Moines River and had stopped to rest on a couple of different sandbars. With the low water levels, paddling their way to Hardfish Access near Eddyville proved to be more than they could accomplish before dark. The third kayaker then called for help.

Barricaded Subject Gives Up Peacefully Law enforcement with their weapons drawn during a barricade incident in Oskaloosa this morning. Oskaloosa, Iowa – Several law enforcement agencies gathered at an apartment building in the 300 block of 1st Avenue East on Tuesday morning. Oskaloosa Police Chief Ben Boeke said that a subject, Elijah John Utterback, who was wanted by law enforcement, was spotted by an officer in an unmarked car. Utterback was reported to have entered an apartment after spotting the officer. According to Boeke, officers gave verbal commands with no response to them by Utterback, and the subject was considered to be barricaded at that point.

CERT Helping Residents Get COVID-19 Vaccine Josh Stevens helps at the COVID-19 call center inside Penn Central Mall. Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County CERT Team, or Community Emergency Response Team, has been volunteering their time to help individuals schedule their COVID-19 vaccine. Working out of an office inside Penn Central Mall, the group answers a steady stream of calls, looking for help in obtaining their shot. There are at times as many as six people working, while three is the normal amount of volunteers. The CERT volunteers joined at times with individuals from Mahaska Health. “So it’s kind of a group effort here,” says Stevens.

Supervisors Table Road Vacation And Hear On Co-Line Expansion Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Supervisors met in session on Tuesday morning, where they started with a public hearing regarding a road vacation in Section 33 of Jefferson Township. Concerns about access to properties was one of the first concerns brought to the Board by area landowners. A motion to continue to public hearing until March 15th, 2021, at 9 am was made and seconded. The Board also heard from Co-Line Manufacturing as they are looking to expand their manufacturing business in the county’s northwest corner. Dale Brand, the owner of Co-Line, sat down to talk about the expansion in the past five years and the continued growth of the company.
