SOUTH BEND, Ind. – South Bend Venues Parks & Arts is hosting a community free tree-giving event at Howard Park on May 1.
From noon to 2 p.m., the first 200 guests at the event will receive a free tree seedling to plant in their own yards.
Guests can also make a day of by sampling complimentary food and enjoying the Park’s playground.
South Bend VPA will also host State Senator David Niezgodski and State Representative Maureen Bauer at this event.
“With the 2021 session coming to a close, I’m looking forward to spending more time in the community and connecting more personally with the Hoosiers I represent,” said State Senator David Niezgodski. “This tree-giving event is a great opportunity for families to get outdoors, enjoy some time in the neighborhood and celebrate spring by selecting a new tree to grow in their yard.”
Gov. Holcomb signs pregnancy accommodation bill. Advocates say Indiana should do more. Kaitlin Lange, Indianapolis Star

Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a bill Tuesday that would protect women who request pregnancy accommodations a measure pregnancy accommodation advocates say does not go far enough to make change.
Proponents of the bill, however, have indicated it s a good compromise between the interest of workers and businesses in Indiana.
Holcomb also made good on a promise to beef up the executive branch s own pregnancy accommodation policies, signing an executive order on Tuesday detailing what accommodations state agencies should be providing for pregnant workers, such as assistance with manual labor or more breaks.
It also prevents employers from retaliating against women and specifies that businesses still do have to follow federal laws which require them in certain circumstances to provide the same accommodations for pregnant people as they do for injuries.
This was the second legislative session Holcomb strongly advocated for a bill requiring companies to provide accommodations to pregnant workers, but only House Enrolled Act 1309 moved forward. While I have pushed for different language to become law in each of the last two sessions, I agree with members from both sides of the aisle that voted in favor of the bill as a step forward in assisting pregnant women in the workforce, Holcomb said in a statement. I’ll always be looking for ways to continue making progress on this and every other front when it comes to removing barriers to work in the workplace.”
