Nicola Sturgeon missed an open goal over Boris Johnson s visit north

LETTERS First Minister Nicola Sturgeon missed an opportunity to criticise the UK Government and say what Scotland could have done as an independent nation HAVING watched FMQs on Thursday, it’s clear – as it has been for a while now – that as much as Nicola is a good leader of the SNP, she is not the one to lead any independence charge. It’s not that she couldn’t, but that she doesn’t push for it, even when given the clearest of clear chances. Patrick Harvie asked her about the PM’s visit being unnecessary, he asked her about sticking too closely to the UK rules, he asked about where sticking to a four-nations approach held Scotland back etc. These are clear, wide open goals for anyone of the independence movement to highlight where Scotland could have done things differently – but could not due to being in the UK.

Nuclear developments in Scotland must be opposed by MPs and MSPs

I REFER to the article headed “Scotland, so rich in wind and water, has no need for Johnson’s latest nuclear money-making wheeze” by SNP MP Douglas Chapman (Sunday National, December 20). Highlands Against Nuclear Transport (HANT), which was set up in 2013 to raise awareness of the high risk transport of nuclear waste from Dounreay to Sellafield by rail and sea and Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) by air, is encouraged to see the SNP position opposing nuclear weapons and nuclear power being highlighted. However, until Scotland becomes independent and as long as the Conservatives are in power with energy as a reserved matter, HANT maintains that the Scottish Government has to remain vigilant about UK plans to bury nuclear waste in a DGR (Deep Geological Depository) and to build SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) in Scotland.
