Selectmen Hear of Water Issues With Waterbury

WASHINGTON — The Board of Selectmen, meeting Thursday, May 13, heard from Edwin Matthews, president of the Shepaug River Association, who addressed an agreement negotiated with Waterbury regarding management of that city’s water system and its impact on the Shepaug River. Since the agreement was signed in 2005, the river association has hired a hydraulic expert every three years to analyze Waterbury’s performance to produce a detailed report to demonstrate issues such as water conservation. Mr. Matthews said the city wastes about 30 percent of its water, for which it receives no revenue, due to leaks. “That’s a shame.” He shared a summary of issues and recommended hiring a consultant to defend the town and river. “What we have now is an opportunity to coach Waterbury into adopting water conservation efforts… which will be essential to saving the river.”
