When asked in May 2017 about the prospects for talks between his country and Iran, Saudi Arabia’s then defence minister and deputy crown prince Muhammad Bin Salman, or MBS, was unequivocal in his response: ‘impossible’. The reason, he explained, was Iran’s messianic belief in the Hidden Imam: ‘Their stance is that the awaited Mahdi will come and they need to create a fertile environment for the arrival of the awaited Mahdi’. ‘Where are the common points that we might be able to reach an understanding on with this regime?’ asked MBS rhetorically.
