Fountain Bluff in Shawnee National Forest on fire

(KFVS) - A fire that broke out Tuesday evening on Fountain Bluff in Jackson County grew to 33 acres. Since Tuesday, the Forest Service said fire crews on scene established fire control lines, patrolling and extinguishing spot fires. On Friday, six to eight firefighters patrolled the fire, mostly along Fountain Bluff Road and along the north end of the bluff. Overseen by the U.S. Forest Service, they said incident operations would transfer from a Type 3 to a Type 4 incident commander.

The Murphysboro Elks Lodge presented Robert Bobby Alexander with a Certificate of Recognition for community activities. The lodge noted his 20 years of service as a firefighter, and his work in schools. Alexander teaches children about fire prevention. Alexander said he was surprised and grateful for the award. It was a total shock, I did not see this coming at all. It has been a great privilege for the Murphysboro Fire Department and this town. I do enjoy what I m doing and I like helping kids. said Alexander.

Boater found dead in Kinkaid Lake in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, IL — The Jackson County Sheriff s Office says a boater was found dead in Kinkaid Lake Wednesday night.  Deputies say 36-year-old Benjamin Sigman, of Freeburg, Illinois, went to Kinkaid Lake alone early Wednesday morning to fish. Around 5 p.m., deputies say a family member called and asked for a welfare check for Sigman since he had not returned home and was not answering his phone.  Deputies say they found Sigman s pick-up truck and boat trailer parked on the Paul Ice boat launch in rural Murphysboro, but Sigman s boat was not with the trailer.  The Jackson County Sheriff s Office boat and rescue team, along with the Murphysboro Fire Department, Benton Fire Department, and members of the Franklin County Dive team were called to the scene.

(KFVS) - A missing boater’s body was recovered from Kinkaid Lake hours after he went fishing alone. Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a request for a welfare check on the lake at 5:05 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16. They said Benjamin A. Sigman, 36, of Freeburg, Ill., went fishing alone early Wednesday morning, failed to return home and was not answering phone calls. When deputies arrived at the Paul Ice boat launch in rural Murphysboro, they found Sigman’s truck and boat trailer parked on the boat launch. His boat was not with the trailer.
