Peter L. Slavin â79 will step down as president of Massachusetts General Hospital, a role he has held for the past 18 years, he announced in a message to hospital affiliates Wednesday morning.
Under Slavinâs leadership since 2003, MGH twice ranked as the top hospital in the U.S. News & World Report âBest Hospitalsâ list, established numerous research programs including the Ragon Institute and the Center for Clinical Data Science, and spearheaded initiatives to combat racial and ethnic disparities in care.
Slavinâs departure follows that of former Brigham and Womenâs Hospital president Elizabeth G. âBetsyâ Nabel â who stepped down from her position last month. MGH and Brigham and Womenâs form the core of the Mass General Brigham hospital network, known as Partners HealthCare until 2020.
Contracted dining workers at two Harvard schools received welcome news this week as Harvard Medical School announced it would not pursue 16 layoffs as planned, and Harvard Law School announced it would continue paying contracted dining employees and eventually bring them in-house.
The University reduced support for employees covered by its emergency excused absence policy, which had sustained pay and benefits for all employees whose work had been suspended due to the pandemic, on Jan. 15. Idled contracted employees could no longer receive pay and direct employees could receive up to 70 percent of their pay, though continued application of the original policy was up to each Harvard school.
