Texas elementary school surprises cafeteria worker after she becomes a U S citizen

What a big surprise, Ponce told Fox News. It was a special day. Students and teachers at an elementary school in Texas surprised a cafeteria worker who became a U.S. citizen earlier this month with a celebratory parade.  (Oliver Elementary School/Kyle Chambers) Kyle Chambers, the principal at the school, said it was not only an incredible moment for Ponce, who has grown close to students and staff, but also a learning opportunity for the kids.  I talked to the kids about the process someone would go through to become a citizen, how hard that was and the hard work that it took to get there, kind of how hard work makes our dreams come true, Chambers told Fox News.

The cafeteria worker came from Mexico to America 18 years ago. According to Fox News, Maria Ponce has been working at Oliver Elementary School in central Texas for the past five years. Ponce finally became a naturalized U.S. citizen on May 3 after six years of trying to become one. Recorded footage shows students in the hallways with American flags to congratulate Ponce as she walks through the school.

Vaccination Rates Remain Low in East County

Ponce is convinced she won’t be getting the vaccine.  “All my kids keep their masks on, do the handwashing and take the proper precautions,” said Ponce. Both her and White aren’t alone in their hesitancy.  The county’s latest vaccine allocation report indicates that those living in the eastern part of the county have accounted for just 12.7% of those vaccinated so far.  The region stretches from La Mesa, Santee, Ramona, and out past Julian, yet they maintain the lowest vaccine allocation rate in the county.  But while some residents are simply against the vaccine, others say they haven t gotten it because there isn t any available.
