Two more dead of COVID-19 in Granville County

Teen dies after shooting; police looking for Kia Optima

HENDERSON — The year’s first homicide in Henderson and Vance County claimed the life of 18-year-old Antonio Williams Jr. on Monday. Police Chief Marcus Barrow said detectives believe Williams was shot near the corner of Wester Avenue and East Winder Street. But police learned of the incident after officers were summoned to Maria Parham Health’s emergency department because a person was being treated there for a gunshot wound. When they got there, they were told that Williams had arrived in a private vehicle, and that the people who’d brought him to the hospital had already left. Williams died shortly afterward, Barrow said.

Another COVID-19 death reported for Vance County

HENDERSON — Another Vance County resident has died of COVID-19, even as more doses of the two vaccines that could slow the spread of the viral infection trickle into the area. Granville-Vance Public Health officials said the latest victim, a 56-year-old woman, died on Dec. 21 at Duke University Hospital. She was the 67th resident of Vance County to die because of the coronavirus so far in the pandemic. Meanwhile, Maria Parham Health CEO Bert Beard said his hospital received an allotment of the Moderna vaccine — one of two the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved on an emergency basis — on Tuesday.
