FORT MYERS, FLA â Gabriele Spuckes, the Chair for the Lee County Democrats, says the group has a specific goal Tuesday. We re out here to show the support for the Cuban people.
She and other local democrats gathered for a rally Tuesday outside of the group s headquarters in Fort Myers.
However, heavy rains caught the group before our camera could capture the event. But, that water didn t stop the sentiment.
Earlier on Saturday, many came out to show what “Freedom for Cuba” means to them.
Those three words mean so much to the people who lined the streets on Sanibel. They shouted for freedom against the country’s communist regime.
Maria Davila has friends and family in Cuba and organized Saturday’s protest. She says there’s a point she wants to get across.
“For justice and liberty. Human rights for Cuba,” said Davila.
She says the protestors don’t want mercy, they want justice. “We are not asking for mercy. We’re not asking just for money from the U.S. government. We’re asking just for justice and liberty. Freedom for Cuba,” Davila said.

After nearly a week of Southwest Florida protests showing support for Cuban freedom, people marched down the streets of downtown Fort Myers Friday alongside Fort Myers Music Walk.
The people we spoke to at the protest say they do not plan to stop demonstrating their support for their families in Cuba who are also crying for their right to freedom.
At times, we heard chants in support of the Cuban people coming from the crowds at the River District event.

Passionate cries for freedom for Cubans continue to be heard in Southwest Florida. It’s been five days of protests in our region for the people of Cuba.
As protests continue, the governor is stepping up efforts to try and help the people on the island nation.
We witnessed a protest in solidarity for Cubans held near the Edison Mall in Fort Myers Thursday.
A crowd of people continued to be heard into the night giving speeches about how they say it’s time to stand up and help Cuba, holding signs that say “SOS Cuba” and waving the Cuban and American flags together. These protestors are demanding the U.S. intervene in Cuba.
