Marion County seeing downward trend in COVID-19 cases
After a slight uptick a few weeks ago, the coronavirus cases in Marion County are decreasing once again.
As of Tuesday, there are 1,269 active community cases, which is 110 fewer cases than last week. The number of deaths remains unchanged at 135. In addition, there are 7,936 cumulative cases in the county as well as 4,007 known recoveries.
The decline in cases in the area is following a similar trend across the state of Ohio. As of Wednesday, there are 1,842 new COVID-19 cases and 77 deaths. That is a huge drop compared to three months ago, when 13,559 cases were recorded Nov. 30.

Chief Richard Nighelli announced the promotions of three members of the department.
Sgt. Jeffrey Habicht was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and officers Larry C. Savery and Sean Day were each promoted to the rank of sergeant. All three were appointed to their new ranks during the virtual Marion Board of Selectmen meeting Jan. 19. I d like to congratulate Lt. Habicht, Sgt. Savery and Sgt. Day on their promotions, Nighelli said. Each brings several years of experience and valuable skills to their new positions and I am confident that they will continue to serve the Marion community well.

Marion Police Officers are investigating a homicide on the 120 block of S. Seffner St. in Marion after a Monday night shooting left one man dead, according to a press release.
Police identified Ricco D. McGhee, 43, of Marion as the victim, according to the release. Jay McDonald, Marion Chief of Police, said officers originally were dispatched on-the scene after a report of a shooting at 10:41 p.m. Monday. They found the victim seriously injured from being shot in the chest and transported him to Marion General Hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead.
Police have also issued a warrant for Ziair E. Green, 17, of Marion for murder. Police advise that he might still be armed and that the public should use caution if he is seen. Additionally, if anyone knows where Green might be located, they are encouraged to reach out to local police with information.
