Rahul Dubey, Who Sheltered Protesters in His Washington D C Home, Among TIME Heroes of 2020 | Global Indian

An Indian American man in Washington, D.C., who gained notoriety over the summer for sheltering 70 protesters in his home after they were trapped and pepper-sprayed by police along his street, has been featured in Time magazine’s “Heroes of 2020” list. Time, which labeled Rahul Dubey as “The Man Who Gave Shelter to Those in Need,” detailed the events that led Dubey to usher people into his home on the evening of June 1 (see Dubey told Time that following a 7 p.m. curfew implemented in the city in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests, he noticed crowds forming on his street. He said he saw police setting up barricades to trap protesters, and then pepper-spraying the demonstrators.

“From citizens providing food and shelter to those in need to volunteers who protected their neighbours from natural disasters, these heroes went above and beyond the call of duty in 2020,” TIME said. TIME described Dubey as “The Man Who Gave Shelter to Those in Need.” On June 1, as demonstrators filled the streets of Washington DC to protest the killing of African-American Floyd, Dubey was home, not far from the White House. After a 7 PM curfew, he noticed crowds in the street outside as “police had set up barricades seemingly to trap protesters, and were pepper-spraying those who remained. Dubey decided to take action,” TIME said. “I open my door, and I start yelling, “Get in! ” says Dubey, who works in the health care sector. “All these people were swarming in.”
