Harold D Souza at his home near Cincinnati. He runs the nonprofit Eyes Open International, which focuses on preventing human trafficking and empowering survivors.
Despite a push to prioritize human trafficking in Ohio, labor trafficking continues to get less attention from media and law enforcement than sex trafficking.
Growing up in the state of Karnataka in India, Harold D’Souza’s childhood was simple and humble. As a kid, getting to drink Coke once a year was a big thing.
“We didn t have much money, but we were happy with whatever means we had. My life in India was pretty straightforward,” he said. “It was a dream for every Indian, even today, that going to the United States of America is like going to heaven.”
Part of Ohio’s approach to combatting human trafficking is arresting people for selling sex. But some experts argue that arrests make people more vulnerable to being trafficked.
The Transcript
Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey is known as a crusader for civil rights and social justice, and on Saturday, May 15, she called the BU School of Law Class of 2021 to action, telling the graduates that they are the ones who can help build the world anew in the wake of “a global pandemic [that has] exposed the cracks of our fractured society.”
That call to action rang out in speeches throughout the University’s Commencement weekend, including in Sunday’s keynote Commencement address to undergraduates by US Representative Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) (Hon.’21). “You are today’s Freedom Riders,” Pressley told them, a message Healey carried as well a day earlier.
