Why we need to think communally in lockdown     Vaccine comparisons. Mass protests. Interstate sniping. Quarantine complaints. Community scapegoating. The pandemic soundtrack closes around us like an ever-tightening girdle; each new statistic and flash of opinion and political obfuscation turns the screw further. The daily press conferences have become morbid viewing, sound clips looping on endless repeat, channels of doom. As the miasma invades my psyche I realise it’s not the lockdown or even the pandemic causing the greatest distress; it’s the dissent emanating like scattershot from the calamity’s core. Everywhere I look, it seems, there is something ready to flay my already-scorched nerves.

Wicked Local The 2021 recipients of the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund s mini-grants have been announced. This marks the eighth year that the fund has awarded funding for creative initiatives in the three areas of its mission  Effective Teen Relationships & Violence Prevention, the Arts, and Community Service. Applicants this year had the burden of planning around the significant challenges presented by COVID-19, but this still turned out to be the most competitive application season ever. After difficult choices, a total of 15 project proposals were funded this year, all of which carry Lauren Dunne Astley’s spirit and memory into their important work. They are:

The event organizers received an outpouring of support from local mental health professionals and agencies who presented workshops on Feb. 17, as well as from local business owners who donated gift cards used as prizes for a trivia game during the evening. Although the past two Hope for Tomorrow events were in-person mental health fairs created and sponsored by the staff at Woods Road Elementary School, this year’s virtual format safely delivered much-needed information to families on many aspects of wellness during this extremely stressful period, according to information provided by Hillsborough Township.
