SARASOTA – Last weekend marked the one-year anniversary of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Florida. On Monday in Sarasota, health experts, residents and elected officials at City Hall wrangled over whether the city should endorse guidelines for public health during the pandemic set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While city commissioners unanimously supported a resolution that simply acknowledges that “face coverings and social distancing guidelines” are “necessary to combat COVID-19,” it came with considerable backlash from area residents.
At least 12 speakers espoused conspiracy theories and debunked science, arguing that face coverings either don’t work or that the COVID-19 pandemic, which has infected 25,803 people and killed more than 740 in Sarasota County, is not enough of a health risk to implement public health safety measures.
