Restaurants foster connection and conversation, furnish an escape from the day-to-day routine and, from hamburger to haute cuisine, transform sustenance into bliss. Restaurants are economic drivers, too. In 2017, labor analytics research firm Emsi noted that more people in the region worked in restaurants than in any other field; that’s not counting the other spokes in the wheel, such as farmers, janitorial staff and laundry services, that make the industry run.
This list is dedicated to everyone who works in the hospitality industry. To that end, I’ve decided not to name executive chefs in each restaurant’s information bubble, as is typical for our list. This isn’t meant to diminish the importance of an executive chef to a restaurant; instead, see it as a reflection of the reality that restaurants are a holistic operation.

After agreeing to a lifetime together, it’s time to discuss a budget, send out save-the-dates and Google “Pittsburgh wedding venues.” But narrowing down so many options to one perfect setting can be a bit overwhelming. We’ve chosen four spots, each opened in the last 10 years, as the best venues in town. The best part? Each of them can be tailored to any couple’s desires.
It has been just about a week since Gov. Tom Wolf issued his order to shut down indoor dining across the commonwealth, and the impact on industry workers is already palpable, especially in light of the rapidly-approaching holidays.
Wolf’s directive, one of several mitigation efforts put into effect on Dec. 12, dealt a substantial blow to the already heavily impacted world of restaurants and bars in Pennsylvania. While outdoor dining, food and alcohol takeout still are permitted, thousands of servers, hosts and hostesses, bartenders and other employees have found themselves unemployed or severely underemployed.
