The bypoll to Pandharpur-Mangalvedha assembly constituency in Maharashtra s Solapur district will be held on Saturday amid the COVID-19 surge in the state and the restrictions imposed by the government to curb the spread of the virus. The ruling NCP and the opposition BJP are in a direct fight in this by-election, which was necessitated due to the death NCP legislator Bharat Bhalke owing to post-COVID complications in November last year.
Maharashtra issues directives for seamless movement, marketing of poultry products

Maharashtra’s Animal Husbandry Commissioner has been asked by the Secretary of Animal Husbandry Department of the State to write to all the district collectors for maintaining a free movement and hassle-free selling of poultry products in the State.
Since the outbreak of bird flu on January 8 in Maharashtra, 5,987 birds including wild birds, carrion birds and even parrots and common crow have died. Of the total number of birds that died due to infection, 745 are poultry birds.
Maharashtra’s Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry Department, Anoop Kumar, citing his earlier communication with an official of the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, has asked Animal Husbandry Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh to ensure that there is a seamless marketing of poultry products from non-infected zones in the State.

In a press note issued regarding the ongoing bird flu menace, the Maharashtra government on Monday (January 18) informed that a total of 829 birds, including 699 poultry, were found dead in the state till 5:30 PM on Sunday (January 17).
Apart from poultry birds, mortality was observed in 63 other birds like herons, sparrows, parrots etc. In addition, a total of 67 crows have died.
Meanwhile, the samples have been sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal and Disease Investigation Section in Pune for testing.
