Café BAO Kings Cross restaurant

The BAO team’s largest and most distinctive restaurant yet is inspired by Asia’s Western-style cafés, offering creative takes on Western staples. What:​ An impressive Kings Cross restaurant that s partly modelled on the boleros (Western-style cafés) of Taiwan, which were especially popular in the 60s and 70s. As such Café BAO​​ has a quirky, old school look and serves a curious menu that offers creative takes on Western café staples.  Who:​ Café BAO is the latest restaurant from Erchen Chang, Wai Ting and Shing Tat Chung. The trio behind the now five-strong BAO and the more upmarket Xu​​ can take much of the credit for popularising the satisfyingly squidgy bao buns from which their London-based restaurant group takes its name. BAO is backed by JKS Restaurants, the prolific and highly-respected restaurant group behind Gymkhana, Trishna and Brigadiers (among others).

Now – on 17 May 2021 – Bao is reopening its little-seen King’s Cross location and has fitted it out with everything restaurant-starved customers could hope for.

Undisclosed ​ Promising to be a restaurant ‘like no other’ in the north east, chef Christopher Spence will open fine dining venture Undisclosed in Sunderland this month. The chef-patron of Emily’s Table in Sunderland  will open his new venture, which takes inspiration from the hidden bars he visited during his time spent in Australia, on St John’s Street in the space formerly occupied by D’Acqua on 17 May. Undisclosed will serve a fine dining menu of ambitious dishes alongside a list of of molecular cocktails. 28 John St, Sunniside, Sunderland SR1 1JG​ Humble Chicken​ Former Restaurant Story head chef Angelo Sato will open a yakitori bar on 20 May. Humble Chicken is inspired by Sato’s Japanese heritage and the ‘traditions of izakayas in Tokyo’. The whole of the chicken will be used, including cartilage, gizzards and even the bird’s knees.
