CS Lewis: Fact And Fantasy
By
CS Lewis is a household name and regarded as one of the most influential writers of the 20
th century. He is the author of more than 30 books, from the much-loved Chronicles of Narnia series to the influential “Screwtape Letters” (1942) and “Mere Christianity” (1952).
His books can still be found on my family’s bookshelves, but what do we actually know of the writer and theologian outside of Narnia?
Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast on November 29, 1898. It was in December 1916 he received a scholarship to University College, Oxford. The following year, during the Great War, he served with the Somerset Light Infantry.
The Pulaski was about 30 miles off the coast of Wilmington on the night of June 14, 1838, when one of its boilers exploded, blowing out the side of the vessel. It sank within 45 minutes.
Called the Titanic of the South, the Pulaski had been carrying some of the cream of society from Savannah, Georgia, on their annual migration north to Saratgoa Springs, N.Y., and other resorts, to escape the heat of a summer before air conditioning.
Another similarity to the Titanic was the condition of the lifeboats. Pulaski had just two, and they were in such bad condition that one sank almost immediately.
The Deadbeats versus Cartmel cakes, Christmas Eve 2020
Fairly early last Christmas Eve, the two deadbeats and I, slowly but not too slowly, decided to take advantage of a bright sunny morning, to walk
Over the Fell to the breadshed. I mean we’d half decided this the day before . . . if the weather was good, if we felt like it, if the deadbeats got up early enough, if all the astral bodies were aligned and I could get the kettle to work and the marmalade didn’t run out. It’s unfair to call the deadbeats that. For a start, my daughter objects to the name – though not very much. ‘I’m not a deadbeat – I look posh compared to you two.’ This is true.

Over the years, Anthony Hopkins acquired the sort of gravitas that allowed him to slot effortlessly into his stint in the Marvel special effects salt mines, nowadays a rite-of-passage for every actor. And he is perfectly cast as Odin, the one-eyed ruler of Asgard, legendary know-it-all and, in the MCU at least, the father of Hela, Thor and Loki. âIâm a little like Odin myself,â Hopkins said in an interview.
19. Bram Stokerâs Dracula (1992)
Everyone sneers at Keanu Reeves wrestling with his English accent in Francis Ford Coppolaâs lavish vampire fest, while unfairly giving a free pass to Hopkinsâ outrageous hamming as Van Helsing, a Dutch bon vivant who cackles âShe is the devilâs concubine, whey-hey!â and babbles about decapitation over dinner. But the actor is having so much fun it would be churlish to complain.
