Cops wearing PPE disperse the students from the Mahatma Gandhi Marg on Monday BHUBANESWAR: Students of different higher secondary schools in the city on Monday staged a protest at the Mahatma Gandhi Marg for the second time in a week to step up the pressure on the government for the cancellation of the Class XII board exam in the wake of the rising Covid-19 cases. As of now, the state government has postponed the higher secondary school examination, which was scheduled to be held on May 18. It is conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education. High drama unfolded at the Mahatma Gandhi Marg as the agitating students refused to move from there. They threatened to gherao Naveen Niwas, if the government does not take decision in this regard in 10 days. Police personnel wearing PPE kits forcefully dispersed the students and took some of them into preventive custody.

Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal unfurled the Tricolour at the state-level Republic Day celebrations at Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar and took salute. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik graced the occasion as the guest of honour. As many as 14 contingents of CRPF, RPF, ODRAF, OISF, Odisha Fire Service, SOG among others were commanded by 25-year-old Kesinga SDPO S Susree in the parade. This year there was no participation of students and NCC cadets in the parade owing to pandemic. There was also no congregation of spectators at the parade site.

Sources said there won’t be any cultural programmes or tableau at the state or district-level celebrations. The state government has asked the collectors to make changes in the usual schedule and undertake preventive measures to contain the spread of the virus. Governor Ganeshi Lal is scheduled to hoist the national flag at Mahatma Gandhi Marg here. Like previous year, chief minister Naveen Patnaik is likely to attend the state-level Republic Day celebrations in the city as a guest of honour. The list of the chief guests for other districts will be finalized soon.
