Timber shortage causes closings, concerns about lumber industry

  When the announcement came in late March that Neiman Enterprises, who has been operating in the Black Hills since 1936, was shuttering its Hill City sawmill, it was met with concern not only for the employees that would be losing their jobs but dismay about the future of the timber, logging and wood products industry. In their announcement, President and CEO Jim Neiman said, “If given the opportunity to purchase timber to keep the mill running, we would have done that. Keeping the Hill City location running would be in the best interest of the forest and communities over the long term. The Hill City location employs 120 people along with 12 contract crews.”

Grant helps fund logging on Red Lodge Mountain, other areas across eastern Montana

BRETT FRENCH A cross-boundary forestry project on Red Lodge Mountain has been awarded a state grant. It s one of 14 projects given a portion of $4.5 million under the Montana Forest Action Plan. The work at the Carbon County ski area will begin this summer and overlap to adjacent Gallatin Custer National Forest land as well as the nearby Palisades Ranch — all told about 1,000 acres, according to Jeff Schmidt, Red Lodge Mountain manager. “The bulk of it will be on our property, the upper Palisades and from mid-mountain down,” he said. In addition to the state funding of almost $485,000, Schmidt said the ski area will sell any marketable timber removed to help pay for the work. Slash that’s left over will be utilized for the ski area’s biomass wood heater for the main lodge. The heater project still needs funding to be completed by the end of 2022 to qualify for a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, he added.

Montana Forest Action Plan submitted to governor s office

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) announced today that it has released the finalized 2020 revision of the Montana Forest Action Plan. DNRC delivered the completed plan to Governor Bullock yesterday and also submitted the final version to the USDA Forest Service. The Montana Forest Action Plan is Montana’s all lands, all hands plan for addressing forest health and wildfire risk and will help guide forest restoration and management efforts across the state for the next 10 years. “The well-being of our forests is an issue that concerns all Montanans.
