Friend, Enabler and Comrade: Remembering Donna Lynas (1967–2021)
Tributes to the late director of Wysing Art Centre, who supported a generation of artists in the UK
As the Director of Wysing Art Centre since 2005, Donna Lynas built one of the UK’s most dynamic residency programmes. She transformed the site, in rural Cambridgeshire, into a place where artists across disciplines and at all stages of their careers can research, experiment, collaborate and learn. As Chair of the Contemporary Visual Arts Network East and member of the Plus Tate steering committee, she built connections with arts organizations across the country as well as internationally; she was a particularly vocal and energetic supporter of art scenes in the South East. In recognition of her work, Lynas was awarded an MBE in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours, for Services to the Arts. It is not a stretch to say that she touched a whole generation of artists in the UK. She will be missed.

Running until the end of April, the UK is encouraged to draw, sculpt and paint to themes set fortnightly by artists such as Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Jeremy Deller, David Shrigley and Ai Weiwei.

With more time on our hands now is a perfect time to get creative, something that The Great Big Art Exhibition – launched on 28 January – aims to inspire. People across the UK are invited to take part in a collaborative exhibition that sees the nation encouraged to draw, sculpt, paint and build their own piece of art and to stick up on their window, or any part of their house for that matter. Running until April 2021, a selection of renowned artists are set to choose a different theme each fortnight. First, it’s Antony Gormley who’s opened the show with a theme of animals. The iconic Trump baby balloon has been acquired by the Museum of London ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration tomorrow. (20th January). The Museum has recognised its significance in the protests that took place in London in July 2018 and June 2019 when protesters took to the streets on President Trump’s visits to the UK. Trump’s reaction was; “They Love Me In England.”
The Trump Baby can now be consigned to history along with the man himself
The over-sized balloon toured the world and now will be conserved and displayed in the Museum’s future new home in West Smithfield in the coming years.
