St. Jude has a Place Just for Teens that Allows a bit of Normalcy As we continue to help St. Jude in their efforts to treat childhood cancer, I wanted to share something else about St. Jude that I think is really, really cool.  That really cool thing is their “Teen Scene”.  A place just for teenagers who are being treated at St. Jude. The Teen Program at St. Jude is for kids who are 13 and older who have been diagnosed.  Within this program, they have what are called Child Life Specialists.  The job of the Child Life Specialist is to help teenagers feel less stressed as they go through treatment.  One way of doing this is by helping kids understand everything that is going on around them in the hospital.  This doesn’t just mean giving them the how and why but the specialists also help prepare patients for upcoming procedures and test that they might need.

Needham resident named to prestigious neurology program tackling gender disparities

Press Release St. Elizabeth s Medical Center Dr. Okeanis Vaou, Director of Movement Disorders and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, was recently selected for the American Academy of Neurology (AAN)’s Women Leading in Neurology program. Dr. Vaou, a resident of Needham, is one of ten women nationwide to be selected to the prestigious program. The Women Leading in Neurology program is a leadership program designed to help female participants tackle gender disparities head-on, create a peer network with other female AAN members, and advance to the top levels of leadership within their fields and the Academy. 

SLU Hospital BMT Program performing 100th transplant of 2020

LOUIS The Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program at St. Louis University Hospital is set to perform its 100th transplant of 2020, the first time the program has reached the milestone in two decades. The BMT program is sitting at 99 transplants for the year, and three transplants scheduled for Thursday will push it over the edge, SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital said in a press release. The BMT is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
