Vandals have attacked signage installations for Protect Our Waterways No Nuclear Waste (POW-NNW) across several locations around South Bruce. The vandals used chainsaws to destroy the signs and, in some cases, cut telephone lines. The signs had been placed on the properties of residents who are opposed to the NWMO’s plans to build a deep landfill site for Canada’s 58,000 tonnes of nuclear waste in their community.
“We will not be intimidated by those that seek to silence us through acts of vandalism and violence,” said Michelle Stein, President, POW-NNW. “This only serves to strengthen our resolve to resist NWMO’s proposed nuclear waste dump. The NWMO consistently refers to our community organization by the name ‘unwilling to listen group’. It is hard to believe in Canada, in 2021, that standing up for the people’s right to a democratic vote is considered activism and cause for one to be labelled as a radical. I’ve often heard late night newscasters and other people say, “democracy is a fragile thing”. I never thought much about this statement until recently and I’m starting to realize those late-night pundits and academics may be right. I’m not referring to big events around the world, I’m talking about issues right here at home in South Bruce, happening now.
