Data modelling by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) suggests that Gauteng will be the hardest-hit province during the next Covid-19 surge.
The NICD s latest Covid-19 modelling report indicates that Gauteng will be the worst affected province when the third wave hits, in the worst-case scenario.
Epidemiologist Professor Alex Welte says Gauteng is more vulnerable than other provinces due to a number of potential factors.
Welte explains that Gauteng is at a higher risk due to the sheer size of its population and the age structure in the province.

Researcher and epidemiologist Professor Alex Welte extrapolates that more than half of SA s population has likely been infected with Covid-19.
Welte has based his estimation on the findings of a Covid-19 antibody study that he co-authored in collaboration with the National Blood Service.

The study suggests that a large percentage of South Africa s population has likely already been infected with Covid-19.
The findings also show that there are significant differences between the prevalence of Covid-19 when comparing racial groups.
The researchers conducted Covid-19 antibody tests on samples taken from blood donors across four provinces between 7 and 25 January.
