UAE residency: Foreign students can now sponsor families
Foreign students in the UAE will now be permitted to sponsor their families, provided they have the financial means to do so

The UAE has amended its residency laws to now permit foreign university students in the UAE to sponsor their families, provided they have the financial means to do so and can afford suitable housing.
The decision was conveyed via Twitter by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, January 24.
Dubai: The sudden shift to distance learning and work from home forced by the COVID-19 pandemic has turned the focus on science and technology for students, universities and employers, UAE-based education experts said on International Day of Education today.
Tech degrees and jobs in data science, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity and related fields have seen a surge in demand, the experts said, noting universities themselves have had to enhance their online teaching to cope with the pandemic, which had closed campuses. The rise in online degrees and distance teaching has also increased the need for quality control and accreditation systems.
Dubai: A COVID-19 vaccine rollout encouraging more students back to campus, progress on key projects and the introduction of golden visas has created a favourable atmosphere for the UAE’s academic community, despite ongoing global challenges.
Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Knowledge Park are collectively home to more than 27,000 students and believe that the emirate’s education sector has more than a few reasons to be optimistic about the future.
After breaking ground in 2019, construction on The University of Birmingham’s state-of-the-art campus in Dubai International Academic City is on in full swing. Ranked among the world’s top-100 universities, the elite British institution will accommodate up to 2,900 students upon completion.
