Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds says there are up to 30 migrant nurses living in Southland who could be working in aged care facilities if their qualifications were recognised.
Robertson said he understood the need was pressing. The Government was bringing 500 people a fortnight into New Zealand through managed isolation facilities, and although it had started with registered seasonal employees and students, it was working on skilled migrants next, he said. Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor was in talks with Federated Farmers and DairyNZ to help ease labour supply challenges for farmers, Robertson said. The trans-Tasman bubble had freed up space in managed isolation facilities, he said, and with fewer people wanting to travel to New Zealand in the winter months, there would be more space available from migrant workers.
