Carifta 2021 Games change date for July in Bermuda
Monaco, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) World Athletics confirmed today the change of the date of the Carifta 2021 Games for the month of July in Bermuda, as announced by the Athletic Association of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (Nacac). Through its official website, the governing body ratified the celebration of the 49th edition of the regional youth athletics championship to be held in Bermuda on July 2 and 4 and not in April as planned in the calendar.
As World Athletics reflects, the modification in the youth tournament calendar responds to the current situation with the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced its cancellation last season.
Boldon responds; Forbes says meet will go on Ato Boldon.
Speaking for the first time since a disagreement of sorts prevented his prized athlete from running in Freeport, Grand Bahama, foreign coach and world-renowned track analyst and sportscaster Ato Boldon, a former World Champion sprinter and Olympic medalist, fired back at meet organizer Jerial Forbes, stating that there was nothing in place to facilitate a well-structured track and field meet.
Jamaican World Under-20 Double Sprint Champion Briana Williams was one of the headliners of the Neymour Athletics Christmas Odd Distance Track and Field Classic in December. A subdued version of the classic took place on Saturday December 19, at the Grand Bahama (GB) Sports Complex in Freeport. The first day of the meet was canceled.
CARIFTA 2021 could be postponed
CARIFTA 2021 is on…. for now.
According to North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) President Mike Sands, a Bahamian, cancellation of the premier junior athletics meet in this region is not an option at this juncture, but it can be postponed.
The 2021 CARIFTA Games is one of those regional meets that is set for the early part of 2021, and at this point, it’s obvious that COVID-19 will still be a nuisance in portions of 2021, if not for the entire year. The World Athletics (WA) World Indoor Championships, initially scheduled for March 13-15, 2020, in Nanjing, China, were pushed to March 2021, and now they are being postponed again, set for March 17-19, 2023, still in Nanjing. The biennial meet will now be held for three successive years, in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
