Elected and health officials are encouraging a return to more widespread mask-wearing as concerns about rising cases and the spreading delta variant grow.
The state s case numbers have been on an upward trajectory, reaching nearly 1,000 new cases Monday, according to the state Department of Health Services.
In Milwaukee, Mayor Tom Barrett on Tuesday recommended that all Milwaukeeans wear masks in groups and in indoor settings outside their homes because of transmission of COVID-19 even among some vaccinated people.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, too, announced a return to more stringent masking requirements for county employees, calling the pace at which cases are increasing in the county “alarming.”
Ed Fallone, one of three newly appointed members to the Fire and Police Commission to make their debut Thursday, will begin his term as chair of the oversight body for the police and fire departments.
The choice marks a new chapter for the board, which now features less than half of the commissioners who were in power during their legally flawed demotion of Alfonso Morales from police chief to captain last summer.
Fallone will be backed by Everett Cocroft, one of three remaining holdovers from Morales’ demotion, as the commission’s vice chair. And that number could soon narrow to two, with Mayor Tom Barrett saying earlier this month he hoped to nominate a replacement for commissioner Ann Wilson by the end of July.
