Using surveillance video footage, detectives determined that Brenan Hill had hidden the gun used in the shooting behind a building at the Publix shopping center at Palm Coast Parkway and Belle Terre. They found the gun there, wrapped in a bloody towel.

Hill yelled them at his 22-year-old girlfriend not long before he shot her in the head. The woman somehow survived the bullet, though she was in a coma for weeks and may never be the same again.

“I’m not from here, I’m not from here, it happened like by fucking, whatchammacall it, the Microtel and shit,” he says. “He asked me if I had weed,” he says, describing how he and his girlfriend were sitting in the car, how the two of them were homeless and trying to find a place, and this man walked up to them, so he rolled down his window.
