LA GRANDE â The number, even with a calculator in hand, is eye popping.
La Grande High Schoolâs class of 2021 has been offered a combined $830,000 in college scholarships and awards to a total of 55 students, according to information provided by La Grande High School.
âThis is a testament to the hard work of our students,â said LHS Assistant Principal Eric Freeman.
The assistant principal also said the scholarship total is a credit to people in the community reaching out to young people. Freeman noted that a number of the scholarships are from local organizations.
âThey are the lifeblood of La Grande,â he said.

UNION COUNTY â Leaders in some Oregon school districts, including Astoria, are rejecting standardized assessment testing, which normally happens each spring, because of instructional time lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Assessment testing still is alive this spring in Union County, however, where all six of its public school districts are conducting it through May. Educators in the districts said they believe the tests provide valuable insight.
âThey tell us when we have gaps in our instruction. They drive our instruction,â said Cove School District Superintendent Earl Pettit.
Elgin School District Superintendent Dianne Greif also said assessment test scores are meaningful.
âThey help us develop future instructional strategies,â Greif said.

Elephant Santas spread pandemic awareness among Thai children

Christmas and Thailand’s love of elephants combined on December 23 when four of the giant creatures dressed as Santa turned up at a school just outside Bangkok, complete with huge coronavirus masks.
Excited children from Jirasat Wittaya School in Ayutthaya, an hour’s drive from the capital, sang Christmas carols and lined up to have their photos taken with the animals, which is in an annual tradition.
