The chief executive officer of Alabama’s only freestanding pediatric hospital is retiring June 1.
Mike Warren, president and CEO of Children’s of Alabama since January 2008, will be succeeded by Tom Shufflebarger, currently serving as COO and senior executive vice president.
Under Warren’s leadership, the hospital broke ground in 2009 on an expansion that would become the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children. The $400 million, 12-story building was designed to accommodate projected growth, technology needs and pediatric services such as cardiovascular surgery and organ transplant care. Last June marked the 11th straight year Children’s of Alabama was included among the nation’s best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.
