WESTMINSTER â The Bellows Falls Union High School board voted unanimously Monday night to send a suggestion for a bonus for retiring teachers to its policy committee, rather than approve the plan outright.
Chairwoman Molly Banik of Westminster said she was âtiredâ of the board coming up with different plans every year to honor retiring staff. âEvery year it comes up,â she said. âWeâve got to stop this. Itâs got to be written down.â
âThis is muddy, and I donât like muddy stuff,â she said at the end of the discussion.
BELLOWS FALLS â The Rockingham School Board voted Monday to give âthank-youâ bonuses to retiring teachers.
On a 3-1 vote, the board adopted a suggestion by School Director Priscilla Lambert, who suggested that the teachers get $100 per year of service as a departing gift.
Only teachers with 20 years of experience in the school district would be eligible for the thank you gift, so that a teacher with 20 years would get a $2,000 bonus.
Lambert said it is a relatively modest gesture the school district could adopt to help say thank you for years of dedication.
School Director Jason Terry said he was uncomfortable with the bonus idea and voted against it. âI donât think itâs a good idea,â he said, saying he wanted to see âhard numbersâ before a vote.

WESTMINSTER â Bellows Falls Union High Schoolâs new principal John Broadley picked his second in command this week and he didnât have to look very far.
Broadley, who in addition to being the current assistant principal, was the girlsâ varsity soccer coach, and his assistant was math teacher Sean Murphy, who coached the junior varsity girls.
On Monday night, Broadley asked the BFUHS board to approve his plan to bring his coaching assistant along with him to the schoolâs administrative offices. The board agreed unanimously.
Murphy is chairman of the schoolâs mathematics department, and even before the coronavirus pandemic forced distance learning, he was having the schoolâs math teachers record their lectures and classes so students could watch them later, Broadley noted. He has a strong background in technology as well, he added.
