Massena Central School principals discuss bringing more students back for in-person instruction

MASSENA — It may be easier to bring elementary students back to the classroom in the Massena Central School District, but high school Principal Alan Oliver said it’s going to be more of a challenge for his building. Mr. Oliver was one of the speakers during a Monday virtual meeting to discuss the district’s reopening plan under revised state Department of Health guidelines. “The sad reality of it is at the high school, many of the components of the guidance really preclude us from being able to change much from what we’re doing right now,” he said. One of the changes reduces physical distancing from 6 feet to 3 feet for students in classrooms. In some cases, cohorting — a group of students who move together within that group every day — may be required.

Massena Central High School band director recognized by National Band Association

MASSENA — Massena Central High School’s band director has received national recognition for his work with student musicians. Jonathan Hunkins received the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence in January, and the accolades started pouring in this week after Principal Alan Oliver learned of the recognition and posted it on social media. Mr. Hunkins said he was talking to Mr. Oliver one morning and the Citation of Excellence was one of the topics of discussion. “I kind of mentioned that I had been given this award from NBA,” he said. After he found out, Mr. Oliver posted his congratulations Sunday morning on the high school’s Facebook page.

Massena Central High school announces plans for prom, graduation

MASSENA — Plans are in the works for a prom and graduation ceremonies at Massena Central High School, but Principal Alan Oliver says they won’t be the typical events. In a video message, Mr. Oliver updated parents on the ongoing plans to stage the prom and graduation ceremonies, as well as allow spectators at some spring sporting events. The prom for juniors and seniors is tentatively scheduled for the evening of June 12. Attendees will need to wear masks and maintain 3 feet of social distancing. “We’re going to do something. The (Department of Health) guidance really doesn’t allow us to do a dance. If you’ve ever been to one of our proms, there’s not 3 feet of social distancing, so the idea of having a traditional dance is probably not going to happen for us,” he said. “Our junior class and the kids in the junior class are working very hard right now to design an event, and the district is supporting them in any way we can. The event i

Massena schools may have problems bringing back all students under new social distance guidelines

MASSENA — Because of its size, the Massena Central School District may have problems trying to bring back all of its students under the revised social distancing guidelines, if they decide to go that route. The state Department of Health has reduced social distancing guidelines from 6 feet to 3 feet, but there are still issues to contend with, high school Principal Alan Oliver said in a video message to families. “As we move into the end of the year, I need you to remember something. As all of our school districts around the county and around the community are getting this new guidance, we’re all going through the guidance and figuring out what’s possible for us. I want to say to the Massena community, as you see this unfold over the next months, you will find that Massena is going to have to be different than maybe some of the smaller schools that are around us. I want to make a very strong point that the reason for that is size,” said Mr. Oliver, who also
